Changes in our Thinking

Originally we had highly idealistic visions of people like us coming to live, work and play together harmoniously in the Garden of Paradise.  While we are still open to this possibility most of our experiences during the last five years have suggested that maybe we were too idealistic.

For one thing we found that many people carry a lot of negative ideas about "community".  Indeed, few people have never had the experience of actually living in community.  And for those who have, many aspects of those experiences have been negative.  We understand this and empathize with this because we, too, have lived in communities – and have had both positive and negative experiences.  It’s just that we thought we’d figured out some cool things to make community work better.  However, that requires everyone to take a risk that they may not be ready for.  And, given the tremendous risk that people are already taking to uproot and move to South America this may be just asking too much.

With all that in mind, we've been considering a different approach.  What we’ve realized is that one of our top priorities is to be and to have wonderful neighbors.  With that in mind, we've been considering the following options:

1.  Sell off larger pieces of land at either end of the Garden of Paradise property (about 25 acres although it could be somewhat more or less) to people we think would be good neighbors (and who would consider us to be good neighbors too). This would be an ideal option for you if you have several close friends or family members with whom you want to create a small community of your own.  It’s also cool if you like being near Vilcabamba and want a fairly large piece of land.  For more information, please click here to write us.

2.  We have several smaller lots within the central part of the Garden of Paradise that we are open to selling outright, unattached to a community.  Again, our primary objective is to have good neighbors.  For more information, please click here to write us.

3.  We are open to the idea of selling Café Cosmos and perhaps the two lots next to it.  This is a wonderful option for someone with the financial resources and the interest to invest in a B&B and a "boutique" conference center.  If you have the resources and the interest, please click here to write us.
